Nancy Dirks, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in Village Shalom’s Weinberg Health Center (skilled nursing), has been named recipient of the Allen and Gloria Block “Champion of Culture Change” Award for 2009. Allen (now deceased) and Gloria Block established the annual award in conjunction with the Menorah Legacy Foundation in 2008. The award was created to recognize and reward an outstanding Village Shalom staff member who is dedicated to the concept of “culture change” and who exemplifies that philosophy in working with and caring for residents of the continuing-care retirement community.
“Culture change” in the long-term care industry is defined as improving the quality of life for residents as well as team members by creating a home-like environment, promoting resident choice and self-determination, empowering front-line team members, enhancing the physical environment and increasing community involvement.
Dirks joined the Village Shalom staff in September 2008, where she has served as a CNA in the memory care and skilled nursing areas.
“Nancy is a compassionate caregiver and a top-notch example of a care provider who is focused on resident rights and dignity,” said Tina Munger, Village Shalom’s Director of Nursing. “Her personalized care for each resident reflects kindness, patience and calmness. She not only promotes the mission of Village Shalom, but takes it to an even higher level by putting the residents first, and by fostering a sense of shared responsibility and teamwork with her co-workers. We are extremely fortunate to have Nancy on our staff.”
The “Champion of Culture Change” Award, presented each December, includes a monetary gift of $750 to $1,000 to the honoree. A wall plaque at Village Shalom will display the name and photo of the current award recipient.
