How I Have Lived My Adult Life

By: Mel Mallin

Many years ago I came across the word “aphorism” in the dictionary and I got hooked. I’ve been collecting them for years and they’ve been a great help in my life. They have helped make me more enthusiastic, get me to try harder in everything I do and encouraged me to volunteer…to make good things happen.

So what the heck are aphorisms? They are simply short sayings with lots of meaning. Here are a few of my favorites:

Years wrinkle the skin, giving up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Being the best I can be always involves helping others.

Ten two-letter words: If It Is To Be It Is Up To Me

When you stop climbing mountains to find other mountains to climb, then life is over. No matter how old we might be, as long as we’re able, we can’t stop looking for new challenges.

I have found it a good idea to ask myself once in a while…”Am I doing what G-D put me down on Earth to do?”

I was a box manufacturer for twenty years and came to the realization that maybe G-D didn’t put me down here just to make boxes. So I sold the box business, and became the first developer of loft apartments in Kansas City. Then, I realized I was still making boxes, only they were bigger boxes in old buildings with people living in them.

I gave that up to take on my new assignments…to get people to laugh and sing. OK, so it sounds crazy, but can you think of anything better to do at 87.75?

So, call me anytime for a joke, a song or another aphorism.

P.S. Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. I still have lots of work to do, so I better get moving.
