26th Village Shalom Father’s Day Run a Great Way to Celebrate
Members of the Kansas City Jewish community, the regional running community and families who simply want a fun start to Father’s Day will be on hand at Village Shalom Sunday, June 16, 2013, for the 26th annual Village Shalom Father’s Day Run/Walk. The race begins at 7:30 a.m., with race-day registration opening at 6:00 a.m.
Runners filled Nall Avenue south of 123rd Street at the start of the 2012 Village Shalom Father’s Day Run/Walk. The 26th annual event takes place this year on Sunday, June 16.
The 5- and 10-kilometer run/walk event is sponsored by the Village Shalom Associate Board, a group providing volunteer and leadership opportunities for young Jewish adults in the Kansas City area.
“The Father's Day Run is an important fundraiser for Village Shalom,” said Ruthie Bergman, race chairperson. “It is a great opportunity for the entire Kansas City Jewish community to come together to enjoy a fun family event, and raise money for a really important purpose.”
That purpose is to support Village Shalom’s programs and services for individuals and their families confronting the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. All proceeds from race sponsorships, donations and registration fees will contribute to that effort.
Besides attracting the Jewish community’s support for Village Shalom, the Father’s Day Run gains a wider audience as an officially sanctioned race by the Mid-America Running Association, drawing hundreds of runners from all over the region. Last year’s race attracted nearly 500 runners and walkers in the 5K and 10K events.
In addition to the race, participants and family members can also enjoy a Kids’ Fun Run, a children’s arts-and-crafts tent sponsored by U.S. Toy/Constructive Playthings, and a variety of refreshments for an energizing start to the day.
“Race day is filled with so much excitement and so many activities,” said Jeff Stolper, Village Shalom Associate Board president. “We just want as many people as possible to come out and experience it.”
