Village Shalom continues to move forward with its plans for a major campus expansion. The project will increase the footprint of the south Overland Park retirement community by 50 percent. The plans include a new 48-residence free-standing memory care community, a four-story independent living apartment community, a repurposed short-term rehabilitation center with expanded therapy space, and a “Main Street” with dining and service amenities that will serve as the corridor from the new apartment community to the existing continuing-care campus. Construction is on-track to begin in early 2018, with completion set for the late summer of 2019.

The Epsten Gallery is pleased to present ARTicipation Pop-Up Studio 2017: Connections, an open-studio, art-making environment for audiences of all ages and abilities. The exhibit will run May 7 through June 30. The public opening reception will take place on Sunday, May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. Launched in 2012, ARTicipation Pop-Up Studio is an annual, evolving exhibition featuring a dynamic salon-style installation of artwork created by Village Shalom residents and other senior citizen groups who participated in art therapy sessions and workshops sponsored by The Epsten Gallery during the year.

Last year ended on a high note for three Village Shalom staff members after the Employee of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Allen and Gloria Block “Champion of Culture Change” Award winners were announced at the retirement community’s holiday party on Dec. 16. When the party was over, the fun was just beginning for Christine Lawson, Rachel Thomas and Michaela Kidd – each of whom stood out from a very deserving field to secure 2016's top staff honors.

Village Shalom resident Judith Perlman has been a member of the American Legion Band of Greater Kansas City for more than 35 years. When early onset Alzheimer's threatened to take it all away, a group of friends banded together to ensure that Judy's music didn't fade.

The award will be presented at the Ages of Excellence Celebration to be held on Nov. 16 at Intercontinental Hotel. Proceeds from the event provide financial assistance for Village Shalom residents.
