Village Shalom Dedicates Bettinger Place to Honor Dr. Irene Bettinger’s Legacy in Memory Care

On July 15, Village Shalom, a nonprofit senior living community in Overland Park, Kansas, proudly dedicated Bettinger Place, its Assisted Living Memory Care neighborhood, in honor of Dr. Irene Bettinger for her lifetime of leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to older adults and their families.
Residents, families, donors, board members, staff, and community leaders gathered to celebrate more than the unveiling of a new name. They came together to recognize a physician, educator, advocate, and leader whose influence has helped shape dementia care and memory care at Village Shalom—and throughout the Kansas City community—for decades.
Dr. Bettinger’s connection to Village Shalom extends far beyond her work as a physician. She and her late husband, Leonard Bettinger, devoted years of service to the Village Shalom Board of Directors, and both had the distinction of serving as Board Chair. Together, they helped guide the organization through years of growth while championing exceptional care for older adults.
Even today, Dr. Bettinger continues to champion Village Shalom. Whether advocating for memory care, supporting fundraising initiatives, or encouraging others to give, she remains one of the organization’s strongest ambassadors. Her commitment to Village Shalom has never wavered, and her generosity continues to help shape the future of compassionate senior care.
As she accepted the honor, Dr. Bettinger reflected on what has always made Village Shalom special.
“Village Shalom, for me, revolves around three main things: our history, our tradition, and our mission of Tikkun Olam—to repair the world.”

Today, Bettinger Place at Village Shalom provides specialized assisted living memory care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. For Village Shalom Board member and Immediate Past Board Chair Bob Gershon, the dedication carried special meaning.
Just days after the ceremony, his mother would become a resident of Bettinger Place.
“Like every family facing this journey, we’re experiencing a mix of emotions. But alongside those emotions is something equally powerful—confidence.”
That confidence, he explained, comes from knowing his mother will be surrounded by professionals who understand not only how to care for individuals living with memory loss, but how to help them continue to experience joy, purpose, and meaningful human connection.
“As a Board member and former Board Chair, I’ve always had a strong connection to Village Shalom’s mission. As a son, that belief is now even more deeply personal.”

Linda Clarkson understands that journey firsthand.
One year ago, she and her husband, Doug, celebrated their wedding anniversary in Barcelona. Just days after returning home, Doug suffered a stroke that dramatically changed both of their lives.
