Each year, Village Shalom’s Father’s Day Run brings together hundreds of runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, and families for a morning that is about much more than miles. The annual event raises funds to support Village Shalom’s Memory Care programs while also celebrating the people, families, and friendships that make our community so special. This year’s event featured one team that captured the hearts of everyone along the course.
Champion Spotlight: Team Doug Crosses the Finish Line Together at the Father’s Day Run
A Runner at Heart
For more than 30 years, Doug was a runner.
He completed countless 10Ks, half marathons, and marathons. Running wasn’t just something he enjoyed—it was part of who he was. It gave him a sense of accomplishment, connected him with lifelong friends, and created memories that stretched across decades.
Today, Doug lives in Village Shalom’s Memory Care neighborhood, but one thing hasn’t changed: the people who have stood beside him throughout the years. His love of running and the friendships he built through the sport remain an important part of his story.
Creating Team Doug
When Doug’s family and longtime running buddies learned about Village Shalom’s Father’s Day Run benefiting Memory Care, they knew they wanted him to be part of it.
Together, they created Team Doug, modifying his wheelchair so he could once again experience the excitement of race day. As family members and friends took turns pushing Doug through the course, they weren’t simply crossing a finish line—they were honoring a lifetime of miles, memories, and friendships.
What makes Doug’s story especially meaningful is that these weren’t friends reconnecting after years apart. Since Doug moved to Village Shalom, several of his running buddies have continued to visit him regularly, often stopping by multiple times each week. Their commitment is a beautiful reminder that genuine friendship doesn’t disappear with time or change because of a diagnosis.
More Than a Race
Watching Team Doug make its way through the course reminded everyone why the Father’s Day Run exists. Memory care isn’t about focusing on what someone can no longer do. It’s about recognizing who they are, honoring the experiences that have shaped their lives, and creating opportunities for meaningful moments that preserve dignity, joy, and connection.
For Doug, that meant hearing the cheers, feeling the excitement of race day, and once again being part of a community he loved.
After crossing the finish line, Doug shared that he had a wonderful time. Anyone who saw the smile on his face already knew.
Friendships That Endure
Doug’s story reminds us that memories may change, but love, friendship, and belonging continue to matter. His family and friends found a way to ensure he could once again experience something that had defined so much of his life, creating a new memory together while honoring so many old ones.
A Champion’s Spirit
Doug reminds us that being a champion isn’t measured by speed or medals. It’s measured by resilience, enduring friendships, and the people who continue showing up for one another through every season of life.
His story is a powerful reminder that the greatest victories aren’t always about finishing first. Sometimes they’re simply about making sure no one has to stop participating in the things that have always brought them joy.
